Q.77 In what areas could UH Hilo develop a nationally/internationally known reputation?
• Astronomy. Geology. Marine Sciences. Hawaiian languages and culture.
• Any of our programs could!
• marine science, astronomy, diversity, etc.
• Astronomy, indigenous cultural studies, marine science, environmentally sustainable community development.
• developing program that build on the Big Island unique reqsources (both physical and human)
• Hands on University
• Those that highlight our natural and cultural strengths. Also, programs that are more 'cookie-cutter' and just like everyone else's might be able to create a competitive difference. For example, the Business Administration department is starting to focus on small and medium sized businesses...this will distinguish them from any of scores of other schools that offer a B.B.A. Our English department could (and may be, for all I know) develop a Pacific Islands literature specialty along with the 'bread-and-butter' English comp. and lit. as offered elsewhere.
• Vulcanology, astronomy, marine science, hawaiian studies, diversified agriculture, holistic health, entrepreneurism.
• Astronomy, marine science, biology, agriculture, vetenarian tech, technology associated with the above areas, diverse society.
• environmental/cultural education
• evolutionary and conservation biology, tropical agriculture and meteorology, ethnic diversity (such as conflict resolution).
• Indigenous studies (UH Manoa is slow in addressing this need) Marine science, student support, volcanology/geology, community service
• Enviromental sciences, marine sciences, ... applied learning experiences in a unique environmental setting.
• CREATIVE THINKING & UNIQUE IMPLEMENTATION of goals and objectives that, no doubt, are VERY similar to virtually every other institution of higher learning (both public and private) around the country.
• Play to our strengths of resources: Hawaiian Studies, archeology/anthropology, ecology, pacific rim international relations, astronomy.
• Astronomy, Geology, Volcanology, Marine sciences
• Astronomy and marine biiologiy, education since we do have a strong program. Hawaiian studies, international affoairs with the far east and other countries due to our locatio
• regional science, arts, humanities
• Environmental issues. Marine Science. Geology. Indigenous cultural and language preservation.
• Geology, Marine Sciences, Pacific and Asian Studies, Geography, to name a few.
• Playing up the living lab in EVERY program offered at UH Hilo.
• We already have a national and internationally known program for the revitalization of indigenous language and culture which seems to have become a reality quite on its own. Without correct and full funding it could more quickly fade away than it took to be here.
• specialize in a few subjects unique to hawaii
• Hawaiian and Indeginous studies, marine science, astonomy.
• Any and every; we're in Hawai'i, one of the most legendary, enchanting, special places on earth - - our English Dept., our Psychology Dept., every dept. should reflect our unique and multicultural location, and our proximity to Asia. We could be great, if only we didn't try to impose a mainland template on our every move.
• anything related to volcanoes, marine/oceanology and something that taps into the local environment, which is made up mostly of smaller businesses and shops.
• Hawaiian Language College.
• Marine Science already has a national reputation. Astronomy and Geology are gimies, but they don't have any leadership to get there. International Business, but we don't offer that. Pre-Veterinary Medicine. Outstanding - but Animal Science needs its own major, not Agriculture with a specialty in animal science. Rainforest Zoology and Botony. We are the only University in the United States technically located in a rain forest. And there's even a rainforest zoo as well. Okay, we're next to a rain forest, but we could be using this just like Astonomy, Geology and Marine Science.
• Actutally this can be done in all of the disciplines, including business, social sciences, natural sciences, humanities/arts and professional studies.
• Marine Science and Astronomy.
• Agriculture, astronomy, geology, hawaiian/native people's studies
• Probably marine science and astronomy.
• A variety of disciplines, including conservation biology, Marine science, anthropology, sociology & community psychology
• Housing areas
• By our diverse ecosystem.
• Indigenous language revitalization w/the College of Hawaiian Language.
• Peace and cultural understanding, environmental studies, education, research (ag, astronomy, geology, anthropology, linguistics, etc).
• Make the campus more monumental and authoritative looking, yet add more Hawaiian flare to it, with perhaps more local style architecture, and MORE AIR CONDITIONING; people aren't going to come here to bake in classes. There should be more native plants incorporated to the landscaping, and overall the whole campus just needs a makeover to make it not so grimey yet it should get a quality of being collosal and monumental, like the way certain mainland universities have that quality of being an authority yet inviting.
• See above--offer an affordable, premier liberal arts education, examine the most outstanding small colleges and learn from their successes.
• Business, Computers Science, Conservation Biology, pre-vet, pre-med, Psychology-just to name a few.
• Astronomy: the university right next to the best observatories in the world.
• See above
• Word of Mouth is the best kind of Reputation.
• I like the idea about focusing on indigineous peoples. Excellent, low cost liberal arts education (for more than one semester) I think we should build up our honors program and add a pre-med/pre-vet/pre-dentistry program; an honors business program and a pre-law program. Work toward 100% graduate school exceptance of grads in these programs and you will definitely get some attention--and keep a healthy enrollment in these programs...and quickly increase your academic reputation..
• Marine Science, Vulcanology, Hawaiian studies, Ethnic studies in general as a multidisciplinary study.
• Television ads. Advertise to all the people living in land locked states, and who are shoveling snow! Advertise to the teen who dreams of traveling the world and seeing 'exotic' places, advertise that the Big Island and it's university are NOT your typical American experience. Enter into a foreign exchange program with many international universities.
• Marine Science, Political Science, AG, animal science, languages, dance, anthropolgy, geology, the list is never ending
• Island as a Laboratory
• computer science, geology, astronomy and marine biology, also with the study of indiginious people
• Geology, Astronomy, and Marine Science speak for themselves. Professional programs such as Business, Nursing, and Computer Science could be advertised heavily with references to former graduates and their places of employment.
• Marine Science and Marine Biology Cross-Cultural and Developmental Psychology Comparative Anthropology Austronomy
• The regular areas: astronomy, oceanography, Hawaiian Studies, Education.
• Natural and social science, and international studies.
• In any field that it desires dependent on availability of resources.
• Indigenous language and culture preservation. Polynesian voyaging and navigation degree. Astrronomy, geology, aquaculture, permaculture, and ecotourism BA and graduate degree programs.
• Conservation Biology/ Genetics Ecology and Evolution Marine Biology Oceanography Astrophysics
• Astronomy programs, Hawaiian Language College
• Astronomy, Geography, Pacific Studies, Hawaiian Studies
• Marine Biology Astronomy Geology Conservation Biology Ethnic Dance and Music with emphasis on Hula Social Work and Criminology Tourism Tropical Agriculture and Aquaculture
• Astronomy Marine Science Diversity
• Marine Science Astronomy Geology Horticulture/Aquaculture Social Sciences (Anthropology)
• All areas - it all depends on the faculty with administrative support.
• Be island focused and offer programs along that line and not general studies that are made for big city living
• Greater development of the Hawaiian program, volcanology, astronomy and ecological studies that relate to Hawai`i.
• Tropical conservation biology, coastal and marine science, Native languages and cultures, Asia and Pacific regional economies, sustainable energy, astronomy, tropical agriculture
• BASEBALL!!! - now that was a joke!
• Hawaiian Studies/Language, Geology, Oceanography, Astronomy, Education
• Tropical Horticulture, Environmental & Physiological Ecology, Marine Biology & Aquaculture
• UH Hilo is already known nationally and internationally as a world leader in indigenous language and culture revitalization. The difficulty lies in convincing people in Hawai'i that these efforts are valuable, in large part because Hawaiian language and culture revitalization are given extremely low priority here.
• I think this is where the learning laboratory aspect works best, and I think we are moving in this direction. e.g. marine science, geology, astronomy, Hawaiian language and culture, tropical ag, etc. However, other programs should not be starved in order to feed these. The liberal arts is still the foundation of our educational mission.
• This is already happening in some areas, and we should be working to do this in all areas.
• Earth sciences, tropical agriculture, rural economic development.
• Natural sciences, agriculture, Hawaiian studies.
• Astronomy, East-West interactions, Geology, Hawaiian Language/culture, Marine Science, Pacific Rim Arts, Music, and Literature.
• Before working on nation or internation....work at the grass roots efforts with students within the State of Hawaii.
• Marine science and evolutionary studies Ecological studies Cross cultural studies of all kinds Nature and travel writing
• We are on the most beautiful island in the world that has a western standard of living. It's why astronomers like us so much. Our island is tropical yet safe. Safe water, safe food, a decent hospital with fine surgeons - in otherwords, we can live like this is the boonies without having to live on coconuts and crabs.
• Studies that capitalize on the environment: Holistic health and healing, sports medicine Gerontology Sustainable tourism Marine science Conservation biology Studies that capitalize on the cultural diversity Behavioral sciences Management, marketing
• By not worrying about reputation, but instead concentrating strongly on the quality of learning of its students.
• geology, marine science, pacific studies, conservation biology (we have the most endangered species of anywhere)
• high profile research by professors and students
• grad programs. unique island themes. indigenous issues.
• Anything related to Astronomy, Volcanology and the Big Island. Pacific/Asian studies, or disciplines with that focus.
• Development and ADVERTISEMENT of Japanese Studies program as a premier liberal arts International focus program.
• Please see previous comments.
• Marine Science, Astronomny, Geology, and Computer Science. US-China relations, indiginous studies and multi-cultural areas.
• Astromomy, Geology, Conservation Biology, Tropical Agriculture
• Expand graduate and undergraduate programs in Geology, Astronomy, and Conservation Biology. Work with internationally recognized organizations already in the community to attract and retain quality students.
• Marketing: TV commercials, email blasts, expecially to friendly foreign countries.
• Many of us feel unprepared in our majors as seniors let alone as graduates. Perhaps this is normal but if it isn't, the school needs to work on things.
• Offer reputable Graduate programs whereby students can stay from Undergrad through Grad.
• Take advantage of the momentum that will be gained from the establishment of the U.S. China Center to establish Master's in International Business, and Chinese Language and Culture programs.
• 1. College of AG: Aquaculture 2. Marine Science 3. Geology: Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes 4. Biology 5. Sociology: Hawaii as global role model 6. Psychology: Bringing Asia into the arena of mental health 7. Computer Science 8. Astronomy
• Focus on the learning laboratory: our unique environment in the pacific with rare and unusual plants and animals, exceptional conditions for astronomy, and a cultural heritage rich and profound in its foundation.
• Undergraduate collaboration in research. Experiential learning in an island environment.
• UHH already has a national and internation reputation as the site of the most developed program in indigenous language and culture revitalization in the United States and North America. This reputation has been recognized in books, the Millenium World's Fair, and major newspapers in Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C. A strong focus on those areas where we have an advantage can bring further recognization. A major problem, however, is that we are not publicizing our national and international reputation here in Hawai'i where people assume that we are second rate to universities outside the state.
• this is highly dependent upon the faculty. You could do it in any area, depending on the faculty you are able and willing to bring in. Apart from these kinds of 'pockets of excellence', then, it is natural to push Hawaiian, and those areas associated with the living laboratory.
• Sciences and Agriculture
• Sorry to beat a dead horse, But: UHH cannot hope to achieve academic excellence unless it builds on its areas of natural strengths. The failure to do so in the greatest such area, that of astronomy, is striking: astronomy is the lowest priority of all the UHH sciences, with a lower level of support in all areas than any other science. This appears to be due principally to an administration that has been enthralled by Big Astronomy and chooses to use its resources to support the Mauna Kea observatories and Mauna Kea management, while neglecting its own academic program. This also is the area of greatest possible public criticism of UHH: young people of this state, in order to get an education that will prepare them for careers in astronomy and jobs on Mauna Kea, must go to the mainland for their college experience, since the UH chooses to use >98% of its astronomy funding for research and graduate programs (which do not admit State of Hawaii residents).
• Biological ecology/evolution; Human diversity and ethnicity; Earth sciences (geography and geology); Marine science; Pacific studies; Hawaiian language and culture; Tropical agriculture
• The world is our limit... Any area can achieve significant recognition. We, as a university, should recognize all earned reputations, large or small, and emphasis our significant efforts!
• Biology
• The areas in which UHH could develop a national reputation are those related to the island, such as programs in marine science, astronomy, and geology.
• MARKETING; EMAIL BLASTS, FAX BLASTS, RECRUITMENT TRIPS BY KEY PERSONNEL
• I think that utilizing our unique location through the implementation of programs both undergrad and graduate that sufficiently take advantage of our land.
• Just strive to be a excellent 2-year and 4-year institution. Reputation will develop, for better or worse.
• Emphasis on its diversity.
• • areas that highlight our unique resources and knowledge-base (geographical and human)
• marine science, indigenous studies
• Funding should be alloted to improve and strenghthen existing programs with national/international reputations.
• In Marine Science, Astronomy, and in Education.
• in Astronomy of course.
• Do lots of research and then expose these findings in things like [studies at the UHH have found that...] Use our island resources effectively. Attract more students and become more popular. Gives students a good stay at UHH and they would tell others about the greatness of UHH and then reputation that way.
• Hawaiian culture and language; Linguistics; environmental biology; marine science; environmentally healthy tropical agriculture, horticulture and aquaculture....
• Things like the indigenous peoples conference.
• We are a small school. Very few schools our size have a international reputation. Those that do are usually endowed private schools. Get over this fixation on having a national reputation in some field. I personally think that it is highly over rated. I think the energy is much better devoted to developing the reputation as being a good school that gives personalized attention to students. I've found we attract many smart students that just don't want to go through the grind at less friendly instituions. We should really keep capitalizing on the attention and quality angle. We don't have to be the best to be high quality.
• obvious areas are biology -- biodiversity, conservation biology; astronomy; marine science; geology; ethnic studies; Hawaiian language and culture
