Frequently Asked Questions

about the UH-Hilo HSP Psy100 Research Requirement—and answers

Q: How many research credits do I need to complete to fulfill the PSY 100 research requirement?
  • Each Psychology 100 student needs to complete three (3) research credits during the semester to fulfill their research requirement.
Q: What equals one research credit?
  • Typically, one hour of research participation = one research credit.
  • However, many studies take less than one hour to complete.  Therefore, any research participation taking one hour or less will be awarded one research credit.  Please refer to “amount of time required and number of credits” listed under each study on the Human Subject Pool (HSP) website at: http://www.uhh.hawaii.edu/~psych/hsp.html, to identify this information for each study you are interested in.
  • Also, one psychology article summary = one research credit.
Q: Can I have a combination of research study participation and article summaries to meet the requirement?
  • Yes, you can.  The three-credit requirement can be met in one of three ways:
1. Sign up to participate in research studies until you have acquired 3 credits.
2. Review 3 academic Psychology journal articles of your choice and write a one-page summary on each article.
3. Do a combination of the two to total three completed research credits.

Q: What is a Psychology article summary?
  • A summary is your brief description of an academic article you have found and read.  The best strategy to use when writing a summary is to read the article you are interested in summarizing, put to the side, and write down what you remember most from the article.  Feel free to incorporate other psychological concepts from your courses if they are relevant to the article.  If you also express what the article means to you in the context of your experience, you will likely have a very strong document to submit.
  • Caution: Do NOT write word for word what the article is saying.  A summary needs to be in your own words, or properly cited, else you risk plagiarizing the work of the author.
Q: How long does my summary have to be?
  • The summary should be one page, double-spaced throughout. 12-point Times New Roman font is preferred.
Q: What if I am concerned about plagiarism?
  • The best way to avoid plagiarism (when you have written down word for word what the authors have written without proper citations) is to read the article completely, set to the side, and then write down the best summary you can without looking again at the article.  Include your thoughts about the article, did you agree or disagree with what the authors were saying?
  • Please visit this site: http://www.plagiarism.org/learning_center/what_is_plagiarism.html, if you have more questions about what plagiarism is, and how to avoid it.
Q: When is the deadline for submitting article summaries and participating in research studies for HSP credit?
  • The last day of regular class instruction.  Caution, this is not the end of the semester or the last day of finals week.  You must have all research participation and summaries submitted by the final day of classes before finals week in order to avoid an “Incomplete” in your class.
Q: How do I sign up for a study?
  • Visit the HSP website at: http://www.uhh.hawaii.edu/~psych/hsp.html, and follow the instructions under sign-up information for each study.  You must sign up individually for each study with that researcher directly.
Q: What if I have a question for a researcher?
  • You may contact the researcher of that study individually by following the instructions under sign-up information.
Q: How do I find an academic Psychology journal article?
  • Visit the UHH library database on-line at this website: http://library.uhh.hawaii.edu/articles/subj_index.htm#psych
  • Here, you can search for Psychology articles (PsycARTICLES and PsycINFO are two helpful resources).  Once you access one of these databases, you can search within an area of interest that you have (e.g., drug addiction, physical or sexual violence, romantic relationships, child development etc.) to find an article that you would like to read and summarize for your paper.
  • If you are unfamiliar with the library on-line database, stop by the UHH library reference desk and ask for assistance and instruction, it is unlikely that this will be the last time you will need to utilize this resource during your career at UHH and you will find it helpful later on down the road.
Q: How do I remove an "I" grade?
  • If you receive an “Incomplete” for Psychology 100 you can receive your “earned” grade once you have completed the PSY 100 research requirement.  The research completion requirements are the same: You must complete three research credit hours either through study participation, article summaries or a combination of the two in order to have the “I” removed.  If you completed some of the requirement during the semester you were enrolled (i.e. participated in studies or wrote summaries but did not complete all three credits to fulfill the requirement), those credits will count toward your requirement, and you need only complete the remainder.
  • Note that each semester there is a deadline for meeting the criteria to remove an “I” grade, and this deadline is posted in the UHH academic calendar.
Q: What if I have another question that isn’t listed here?
  • Feel free to contact Dr. Brian Uldall at uldall@hawaii.edu or the HSP administrative assistant at uhh.hsp@gmail.com for any additional clarification.
Mahalo!
