READING ASSIGNMENTS

NESSE:
Pages 6-12 on lattices and Bravais lattices

MINERALOGY TUTORITALS CD. Look at the 2D lattice demonstrations that show the 5 nets. Study the Bravais lattices in this demo.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • How the ordered structure of a mineral relates to a lattice, be able to define lattice
  • Know what the unit cell is and how it is used to construct the internal mineral structure
  • The Bravais lattices. You should know the major types of bravais lattices (that is the relationships between axis length and angles). You should know the the major cell types--primitive, body centered, face centered, and all face centered. You don't have to know which crystal systems these occur in, but you should be able to recognize them given a figure.

    OPTIONAL READING
Bristol Mineralogy Page--Intro to Lattices and Bravais Lattices
The same material is included in the handouts, but there are nice views of the axial relations for each system here.
