GEOL 212: Optical and Physical Mineralogy

OPTICAL Reflection, Refraction, and Absorption of Light

READING ASSIGNMENTS

NESSE Read Chapter 8, pages 114-118 about the general properties of light and Snell's Law.

ASSIGNED: Also read these sections from Gregg Finn's Brock University Optical Mineralogy Page.
Introduction
Electromagnetic Radiation
Wave Front and Wave Normal
Phase and Interference
Reflection and Refraction
Polarization of Light

WHAT YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND: You should understand the wave properties of light and how light waves can constructively and destructively interfer with each. This is similar to the interference in X-rays. You should understand what light is (as well as any of us do anyway) and how polarization works (what it is and what it does). You should also KNOW Snells law and understand the relationship between velocity, frequency, and wavelength (p. 115, Nesse).

Other Optical Resources Nice Figures for Optical in a Power Point style presentation. No Explanations.
Cornell College

Quick explanation of basic optics and optical mineral identification.
