1. Draw a picture and explain the general shape of the aquifer on the Big Island showing the top and bottom and where water enters the ocean. Explain the role of dikes, buried soils, and other impermeable horizons and how they affect the shape of the groundwater aquifer. What effect does overpumping the aquifer near sealevel have? What is the relationship of groundwater to development?
2. Where do most people in the Hawaiian Islands get their water? Which islands have the most demand for water and which have the largest pollution problems? Where does waste water dumped into the ground go? What types of agricultural, home lawn care, and disposal of hazardous wastes have caused water contamination problems in Hawaii? What effects does polluted groundwater and stream runoff have on us and the environment?
