Ocean EntryApril 13, 2008. Top: Lava entering the ocean produces a cloud of steam and spatter. Below: Photo by Professor Ken Hon. Each piece of Limu o Pele is about 2" across. This "Seaweed of Pele" formed at the ocean entry (such as top photo); molten lava was stretched paper-thin to form large sheets of volcanic glass during the eruption. The glass breaks as it lands, and is further shattered by wind and rain.
