The workshops cover the science behind each natural hazard, the impacts of those hazards on our State, and ways residents can mitigate effects of these natural hazards. At the same time, workshop sessions address ways in which these natural hazards can be used as subject matter in the classroom to address Hawaii State Content Area Benchmarks in Science and Social Studies, as well as applications across content areas including Language Arts and Math.
Teachers may choose which of the four workshops they want to attend. Attend them all, or just one or two! In addition, there is the option to earn PDERI credits by attending the workshops (2 credits per workshop).
Each workshop segment will meet for two consecutive days in June.
For each segment, the first day will feature a presentation in the morning (9 – 12) by guest speakers from the scientific and local community. This presentation is also open to the public, and will be held at McKinley High School auditorium (except for the very first Volcanoes Seminar on June 1, which will be held at UH-Manoa Campus, HIGP Room 110.). Following this morning presentation will be a lunch break; teachers bring lunch from home. During the brown-bag lunch hour, there will be a private Q&A session, just for teachers, to "meet with the experts." After lunch, teachers will participate in hands-on demonstrations, discussions of resources, and explanations of how to interpret scientific data for classroom use. This session will run until 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon.
On the second day of each segment, participants will be in the field looking at hazard-related features and exploring the local geology of the island under the guidance of a subject matter expert. Field trips will include visits to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, State Civil Defense, and points of geologic interest. Field trip transportation will be provided in UH Manoa vans.
Our Registration Form is no longer available for teachers to fill out, as the Deadline to Apply has passed. The material covered in the workshop is geared more towards teachers in the 4th - 12th grade levels. Teachers of K- 3rd grade are currently being placed on a waiting list. Of course, even if all the seats for the workshop are filled, teachers are more than welcome to attend the Public Seminar.
