Cleveland, Alaska (#2)
This week we follow up on the ongoing eruption (March 20, 2001) of Mount Cleveland Volcano in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. Based on satellite data, the Alaskan Volcano Observatory estimates that the explosive eruption lasted as long as 6 hours. The National Weather Service estimated the top of the ash cloud was as high as 30,000 feet above sea level. The satellite photo shows the ash plume from the recent eruption. Nearby Aleutian Islands are shown in black outline.
