Geology and Mapping

Peter Graves was hired to work on Mauna Loa as a GIS and Cartographic Research Support Specialist, assisting with the analysis of geographic terrain and the development of lava flow risk maps. Much of Graves' work involved reviewing digital terrain maps of the island and integrating these into GIS analytical programs; field work included collecting GPS data to provide ground-truth to the remotely connected DTM data sets.

Tim Orr worked on the Cooperative Grant as a Physical Scientific Specialist with HVO's Geology Team. His work includesd monitoring the current eruption of Kilauea and maintaining the GIS data base. Field duties included mapping new lava flows and associated features, collecting lava samples for petrologic studies, and contributing to written and photographic documentation of eruptive phenomena. Orr's work was so outstanding that he now works full-time for the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory as a Federal employee.
