ED 310 — Introduction to Education- Introduction to the tasks of teaching, realities and complexities of schooling, basic educational research, and observational and conceptual tools for interpreting what goes on in classrooms. The course is designed to help students think seriously about education as a potential career and to prepare them for admission into the Teacher Education Program.

ED 314 — Educational Media & Technology- Introduction to theories, application of principles, acquisition of practical skills of educational media and technology relevant to teaching/learning situations, in classrooms as well as non-school settings. ED 340 — Teaching Children's Literature- This course focuses on children's literature and its impact on social, emotional, and intellectual development for elementary school children. Aesthetic appreciation and creative development will be explored by examining theory and practice about the use of literature with children.

ED 341 — Teaching Beginning Reading, Grades K-3- Basic knowledge and skills of teaching reading to developing readers including the use of a variety of reading strategies which focus on engagement in reading, oral language, early concepts of reading, word recognition and phonics, and strategic reading comprehension. Emphasis on instructional and assessment reading strategies which may be used in the K-3 classroom.

ED 342 — Science for Elementary School Teachers- Science for elementary teachers is a hand-on / inquiry course designed to help the elementary teacher develop a basic understanding of the process and thinking that relates to scientific inquiry, habits of mind, safety, and science and technology in society. In a supportive classroom environment, using place-based education as a model, teacher candidates will build a scientific foundation through exploration of science concepts and processes related to the five strands in the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards III (HCPS III). Required for admission into the Teacher Education Program.

ED 343 — Math foe Elementary School Teachers- Math for Elementary teachers is a hands-on, problem based course designed to help the Elementary teacher develop a basic understanding of the ten NCTM (National Council for Teachers of Mathematics) standards, including content area skills as well as process and thinking that relate to mathematic problem solving, reasoning, connections, communication, and representation, which create the Mathematic Hawaii Content and Performance Standards III (HCPS III). Required for admission into the Teacher Education Program. Must be taken for a grade.

ED 344 — Social Studies for Elementary School Teachers- Social Studies for Elementary School Teachers in an inquiry based course designed to help the Elementary teacher develop a basic understanding of the ten Social Studies themes identified by the National Council of Teachers of Social Studies. This course will include the content area skills related to the five disciplines, history, geography, economics, political science/civics, cultural anthropology which create the Social Studies Hawaii Content and Performance Standards (HCPS III)

ED 350 — Developmental Concepts of Learning- Theories of development focusing on the integration of physical, social, emotional and cognitive development during the school-aged years, children (grades K-6) and adolescents (grads 7 - 12). Systematic observation and analysis of the behavior of school-aged children at home, in the community and at school. 20 field hours in schools required. Required for admission into the Teacher Education Program Cohort.

ED 381 — Conservation Biology- Principles of conservation biology and their application to the maintenance and enhancement of biodiversity. Philosphical basis for conservation, scientific theories and research methods used by conservation biologists, and case studies of scientific and socio-political interactions in conservation problems.

ED 401 — Survey of people with disabilities- Survey of disabilities that are present in pre-school, elementary, secondary, and adult learners. Lectures and activities provide information to assist participants to actively discuss the implications of various disabilities on learning with respect to individuals with disabilities.

ED 469 — Principles of Instructional Planning- Inquiry, decision-making processes, strategies of integrated planning in secondary learning environments, and evaluating student learning processes. Overview of national and state standards, materials, content and meta-curricular methodologies. Teacher candidates will collaboratively design unite blueprints as outlined in the Field Experience Handbook using content standards, representing one subject area to design the unit blueprint.

ED 500 — Master's Studies- ED 500 is offered as a 1-credit course, with credit awarded upon completion of the Master's program requirements. Credit for this course does not count toward meeting degree requirements. Students must be registered during the term in which the degree is to be awarded. "NG" is given for noncompletion of requirements. Upon completion of the Master's program, or acceptance of the research paper, a grade of S is given. This course provides Master's candidates, who matriculate as a cohort, the opportunity to fulfill program requirements after completion of required courses. As such, it is a placeholder which maintains student enrollment and active facilitation of research.
