ANTH 387 — Modern Hawaiian Culture (1819 to present)- Change and continuity in Hawaiian culture from 1819 to the present, in the context of interaction with non-Hawaiians. Major cultural transformations of the nineteenth century. Hawaiian culture in the early and later twentieth century.

ANTH 388 — Historical Archaeology- Historical archaeology as an integral aspect of anthropological inquiry into culture-contact and culture change. Topics include research designs, field methods, laboratory methods, and generating anthropological histories. North American historical archaeology is reviewed with an emphasis on the potential applications of historical archaeology in Oceania.

ANTH 389 — Cultural Resource Management- Covering issues pertaining to the identification, evaluation, and conservation of culture resources, with an emphasis on archeological sites. Central topics include the National Historical Preservation Act, the Native American Graves Protection and Repartition Act, Hawaii State legislation regarding cultural resources, and the implementation of these laws in Hawaii by government and private organizations.

ANTH 481 — Archaeometry- Covering a broad range of analytical techniques in archeological research, emphasizing the relationships of archeology to the natural sciences. Mini-sections of the course involve hands-on laboratory experience, covering geoarchaeology, zooarcheology, archaeobotany, identification of raw materials and resources, and dating techniques.

ANTH 482 — Archaeological Research Methods- Archaeological methods including research design, field methods such as survey, mapping and excavation, and laboratory methods. Normally taught as a summer session course. Credit varies depending on length of field project (4-6 weeks, 8 hrs./day).

ANTH 484 — Stone Tool Analysis- Analytical techniques related to stone artifacts (lithics) from archeological sites, with an emphasis on lithic technology, or understanding the processes by which stone tools were manufactured, used, and eventually discarded. Identification of lithic debitage, geochemical characterization, use-wear, and applications to Hawaiian flaked, pecked, and ground tools.
