French gourmet dinner
Saturday, November 11th; 6:00 pm; Hilo Yacht Club
Mangez Avec Nous! UH Hilo’s EuroClub will be hosting a delicious French gourmet cuisine. Menu will include an entrée, plat, legumes and dessert. Please make a $35 check payable to the EuroClub. Limited space available. For more information, contact Kamila Dudley, (808) 974.7521.
International Lunch Menu
Monday to Friday, November 13th to 17th; 11:00 am to 1:00 pm; Campus Center Cafeteria (Sodehxo)
Order a new international dish every day this week, starting with Italian, Chinese, Filipino, Thai and Korean cuisine. Each lunch dish will range in price from $5.00 to $7.00. You will be able to enjoy your meal while viewing travel videos of exotic destinations around the world.
Savenger Hunt
Starts Monday, November 13th and Ends Friday, November 17th
Open to all students: Challenge yourself to learn more about education abroad opportunities by finding all the right answers on campus. You can obtain a scavenger hunt passport at the Center for Global Education and Exchange (PB-9). Prizes will be awarded to those who have successfully obtained the right answers and stamps to fill their passports. (download passport, .pdf, 414KB)
Mystery Language Person
Learn three new foreign language words every day. Visit the Library Circulation Desk to obtain those words, and then from 12 noon to 1:00 pm every day, you will need to look for the mystery language person strolling around campus, key locations: Campus Center Plaza, Library Lanai, and K Building. Prizes will be awarded.
International Poetry Reading
Monday, November 13th; 1:00 – 1:50 pm; Campus Center Plaza
The students who are involved with the next UH Hilo literary publication, Kū Kilakila, will be reading excerpts of their work. This multicultural group of writers will be sharing their thoughts on home, culture, and identity with their audience.
International Flair
Wednesday, November 15th; 11:30 am to 1:30 pm; Campus Center Plaza
A festive event, with international craft, including fair-trade crafts from all over the world brought to us by the non-profit organization 10,000 Villages, as well as crafts and other cultural items from UH Hilo’s various international student clubs; information about going abroad with the U.S. Peace Corps; information about the many study abroad programs available through UH Hilo. Also at noon, you can test your skills by participating in the global trivia designed to spark your knowledge of the world. Prizes will be awarded.
African Night Celebration
Thursday, November 16th; 6:00 – 8:30 pm; Campus Center, Room 301
A night to celebrate Africa with a presentation by Geography professor, Dr. Jim Juvik, Anthropology professor, Dr. Lynn Morrison and guest speaker Ayotunde Adewunmi who will provide an overview of the geography, culture, history and politics of the continent. Returning Peace Corps Volunteer, Dr. Ernestine Enomoto, will have a display and slideshow of her experience in Ghana. In addition, there will be drumming performance by Big Island Drum, followed by a cultural fashion show displaying African garments. Coffee sampling from Africa will be provided by Starbucks.
Grooving with the World
Friday, November 17th; 6:00 – 7:30 pm; Campus Center Plaza (note time change)
Learn to salsa, swing, samba and bon dance. Staff from UH Hilo, Kolin Kettleson and Kathy Hughes, as well as local community member, Lisa Dixon, will be on hand to demonstrate a few steps before letting you hit the dance floor.
Foreign Film Schedule
All movies start at 6:30 pm at the Campus Center Plaza. Bring a chair, mat and relax while enjoying free popcorn and cotton candy.
- Sunday, November 12th: “Motorcycle Diaries.” (Spanish Film). Directed by Walter Salles and featuring Gael García Bernal.
- Monday, November 13th: “Hauru no ugoku shiro.” (Howl’s Moving Castle) (Japanese film). Animated film with box office receipts of over $210 million, to become the #3 film in Japanese history.
- Tuesday, November 14th: “The Road Home!” (Chinese film). Directed by Zhang Yimou. Winner of the 2000 Berlin International Film Festival and 2001 Sundance Film Festival.
- Wednesday, November 15th: “La Gloire de mon père” (My Father Glory). (French Films). Best Film Award from Seattle International Film Festival.
Admission is free and open to the public, unless noted. There is a $3 fee for parking for events held during the day.
