Please join us for five days of spectacular activities starting on Monday, November 17th, on the Haw CC and UH Hilo Campuses to commemorate the fourth annual International Education Week (IEW) Celebration. This year, we present, "Experience South Asia: A Cultural Journey Awaits You!" To commemorate IEW, Mayor Harry Kim has recognized November 17th - 21st as International Education Week for the County of Hawai'i. To see proclamation. International Lunch Menu
Monday to Friday, November 17th to 21st; 11 am to 1 pm; UH Hilo Campus Center Cafeteria (Sodehxo)
Order a new international dish every day this week, starting with Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese and Pacific Rim cuisine. Each lunch dish will range in price from $5.00 to $7.00. You will be able to enjoy your meal while viewing travel videos of exotic destinations around the world.
'Ohana Corner Café

Try a special South Asian food item, planned and prepared by the HawCC Culinary Arts Department. Dishes will range in price from $5.50 to $6.50.
"Where in the World?" Photo Contest Display
Starting Friday, November 14th through Thursday, November 20th; UH Hilo Library Lobby
Browse through the photo display submitted by students from UH Hilo and HawCC who entered the "Where in the World?" Photo Contest. Photos are of images taken from various countries around the world, including Thailand, New Zealand, and China and many more. Formal announcement of winners will be held during the South Asian Night Celebration on Thursday, November 20th.
Ten Thousand Villages Festival Sale
Browse through a global marketplace right here in Hilo. The festival sales will be overflowing with intriguing, handcrafted merchandise ranging from folk art to ceramics, textiles, baskets, jewelry and musical instruments. There will be several occasions to purchase these fair trade merchandise on the UH Hilo campus.

More than Madrassas: Pakistan and Ecotourism

The Northern Areas of Pakistan is home to the world's second largest mountain, K2, and breathtaking mountain scenery. Yet in recent years, Pakistan, particularly the Northwest Frontier Provinces on Pakistan's Afghan border, is largely perceived in the US as a haven for terrorists. In this presentation, Geography professor, Dr. Kathryn Besio, will talk about the diversity of Northern Pakistan's peoples and landscapes, illustrating the rich human geography of the region.

Timor-Leste Exposed!

Discover the world's newest nation, Timor-Leste (formerly East Timor)! UH Hilo students from this fascinating country in Southeast Asia will talk about its history, politics, geography and culture. They will also share some of their gripping personal experiences during the recent independence and post-independence movements.

Enjoy an evening to showcase the activities lined for International Education Week with a cultural performance given by Parasharum and guests. Parashuram is a sarangi Master from Nepal with over 20 years of experience. A sarangi is a small hand-carved instrument equivalent to a fiddle.
Sky Stories of the Pacific Asian Cultures
Monday, November 17th; 6:30 pm; 'Imiloa Planetarium (115 people max)
Join Gary Fujihara as he presents a medley of sky stories, folklore, and mythology from cultures around the pacific. The program is a travel log meets astronomy education and outreach. This presentation will take place in the 'Imiloa Planetarium where the sky will be used to bring these stories to life. Open to the first 115 people.
International Pizza Party

Share culture and language over pizza and soda with local and international students from Hawai'i Community College. Members of the community with an interest in cultural exchange are welcome to join us.
South Asian Food, Fashion and Body Art
Tueday, November 18th; 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm; Campus Center 301
Relax and join us for a sweet sampling of South Asian treats, learn how to look good in a sari and participate in the traditional body art of Henna. We will offer a demonstration of sari wrapping, applications of Henna design and delicious desserts and teas from India and other South Asian areas.

Gangsters swindling people of their homes, funky dances with lions, fraudulent professors at university, romantic sunsets at the beach, a “kissing” car…and a serious discussion on the philosophy of the Mahatma Gandhi? How is all of this possible at the same time? Find out in Bollywood’s smash comedy, Lage Raho Munna Bhai. After the show, stay for a healthy discussion on bollywood facilitated by English Professor, Dr. Seri Luangphinth.
International Flair

A festive event, with international crafts, including fair-trade crafts from all over the world brought to us by the non-profit organization Ten Thousand Villages, as well as crafts and other cultural items from UH Hilo’s various international student clubs; information about going abroad with the U.S. Peace Corps; information about the many study abroad programs available through UH Hilo.
Generational Fasion Show

All encouraged to dress up to celebrate your cultural heritage. UH Hilo and HawCC students, faculty and community members will have an opportunity to showcase their outfits at this year's International Flair on Wednesday, November 19th at 11:00 am by modeling clothes from their grandparent’s generation on the Campus Center Plaza.
Global Trivia Quiz Show

South Asia Night

An evening to celebrate the culture, traditions, and history of South Asia with a panel discussion of experts on the region , a presentation by Audrey Wilson, food columnist with the Hawai'i Tribune Herald and a classical Indian dance performance by Devika Wasson. Crafts will be on sale from the Ten Thousand Villages. Browse through the display of beautiful personal items from our local South Asian community. Winners of this year's "Where in the World?" Photo Contest will be announced during this evening.

Textile Demonstration

Demonstration by HawCC Instructor, Fauna Taylor. Join the Textile Design class (ART 230) in a hands-on experience in using the brilliant blue color of indigo in combination with a variety of other natural dyes for a modern twist on traditional Indian block printing.
Global Astrotalk

Featuring Wayne Rosing of Las Cumbres Observatory & Global Telescope Network. He will present, "Education and the LCOGT Global Network." The LCOGT is a network of two, 2 meter class, telescopes that will provide a new global scale resource for learners of all ages to experience how contemporary scientists use resources in a remote but on-line fusion. The goal of the project is to provide learners with capable tools, interesting objects to observe and measure, capable tools to support analysis, and peer based collaborative support.
