Access to UH technology systems, including PCs, is a privilege not a right. The UH System policy is listed at the bottom of this document.

Hacking an administrator password, in the State of Hawaii, depending on the damages, can result in a 5 year prison term . We are sorry to sound so harsh, but unfortunately, many who have come before you have seen fit to abuse UH technology systems or used our (your) systems to attack other technology systems outside of UH. Even spouses, children of students and employees have been found abusing UH technology systems.

So, you will be held personally responsible for any misuse of any PC or Email account issued to you for any reason.

If you are caught sharing even your English class account, for example, you may lose all UH privileges, system wide.

What about Kazaa, WinMX, Gnutella, and other such software which allows trading of stolen music files and other such copyrighted materials?

This ought to be a no-brainer. Theft is just that, theft! Just don't do it. Illegal web sites will be found and shutdown and their owners will be disciplined.

Things you can do to protect yourself:

  • Don't share your passwords! Your name@hawaii.edu account name is especially valuable since it can access MyUH and affect your registration and expose your personal and confidential information to others.
  • Be careful where you store your password. Ideally, don't write it down. If you must, treat passwords like cash!
  • Report any "funny business" with any PC or your Email account immediately. You can mail reports to acs-info@uhh.hawaii.edu or see the librarians. UHHL accounts can be disabled and reissued. Even if you only suspect a problem, it is better to change your password or get a new account than to have your hard work stolen from you or destroyed.
  • Be careful about what programs you load on your own laptop or PC! Many free programs, like Kazaa are much like a Trojan horse. While they do allow you to download music from other sites, they automatically use your PC as a new site, eating up your hard drive space and gobs of UH bandwidth. These activities are strictly prohibited, even in Student Housing.
  • Do not share your passwords!

Viewing Pornography, Racial hatred web sites and other Offensive materials

This is no joke!

Viewing of such material is not strictly prohibited. What is strictly prohibited is causing undue pain to others in the process. If you must view such materials, please find a private setting, preferably off campus. If lab monitors or staff ask you to stop or to leave, do so. It is within their authority and responsibility to make these judgments. You can grieve any alleged injustice afterwards.

Use some sense in judging what you view and where. Are there children present? Is what you are doing academically motivated? UH systems were not created for the personal pleasure of their users.
