Where can I use my "PC" account? What can it do for me? What is the Z: drive? Floppy Drives? Pen Drives?

UHH Home > Faculty & Staff > Office of Technology & Distance Learning > Academic Computing Services (ACS)

When you log in, be sure to choose the ACSLABS domain unless you are told otherwise by your instructor.

Don't let others mess with your confidential data!

Your PC account is NOT your name@hawaii.edu email account. Your Email account grants anyone who knows your password access to MyUH and your grades. (Do not share your accounts!) There is a project in the works to make your name@hawaii.edu account and password your "passport" to all UH services including PC login. Unfortunately, the way is neither easy nor cheap. We will keep you posted as we make progress.

In the meantime...

Your PC User's Account is good in over 400 locations at UHH

Your PC account was issued to you in the form of UHHL1243 or as a class account such as EN100A01, MR250B29, SC280A13, etc. Any such account is your ticket to access over 400 PCs in the various Open Labs, Teaching Labs, Multimedia Classrooms and Student Resource Centers.

UHHL accounts are issued by the Library Front Desk. All other accounts are issued via your instructors as they see a need for them.

You have server space to store files

All faculty, staff and student PC accounts have space on Z: drive. You can access this space through Windows Explorer or My Computer. Students have 20MB of server space which is erased annually when UHHL accounts must be renewed.

Save your data early and often!

Z: drives are replicated, so you should not have to lose important data. Note, however, loss of data is never an excuse for late papers or other academic projects. You have several options available to you.

  • You can save data to floppy diskettes.
  • You can use a Pen Drive.
  • You can write a CD in the business lab.
  • You can save a limited amount to your Z: drive (Non-UHHL accounts only)
  • You can print out papers in progress. A hard copy is better than no copy at all!

UHHL accounts, while available on demand, do not have any server storage space. ACS recommends you do the most convenient combination of any of the above. It's your work and your grades!

Close up of a Pen Drive plugged into the front USB port on a PC.A "Pen Drive" (shown) is a small unit that plugs into the Universal Serial Bus (USB) port, available at the front of many ACSLABS PCs. A 128MB Pen Drive is typically priced at $40.00 and can hold the equivalent of 88 floppy diskettes. They don't get scratched and they don't get moldy! One faculty member reported his wife ran his pen drive through the wash without damage. A floppy diskette would never survive that kind of abuse.
