Assistant Professor of Hawaiian and Hawaiian Studies (73375)

University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, Ka Haka ‘Ula O Ke’elikolani ( KHʻUOK), University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, full-time, tenure track, nine-month, to begin approximately January 1, 2010, pending position clearance and funding.

Duties: Revitalization, maintenance, development, and implementation of the Hawaiian language and culture as a living language and a living culture of daily life through expertise in Hawaiian language, culture, literature, performing arts, and other skills by: 1) teaching undergraduate courses in Hawaiian language and culture through Hawaiian, 2) teaching courses through Hawaiian in the College's laboratory school program, 3) developing teaching materials and other activities to develop the Hawaiian language, culture and other skills relevant to the College's programs through the Hawaiian language, 4) other support for teachers using the Hawaiian language, especially those at the preschool level, 5) support for graduate education, especially as it relates to language revitalization and teacher preparation, 6) research, evaluation and publication, 7) advising students and their families, 8) participating with faculty, students, and community members in activities to develop Hawaiian language and culture outside the classroom, and 9) performing service to the College and University.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Hawaiian Language and Literature, or equivalent. If there are no qualified Ph.D. applicants, applicants with an M.A. in Hawaiian Language and Literature or related field will be considered. Demonstrated native speaker or near-native speaker fluency in Hawaiian. Demonstrated Hawaiian language practitioner status. Demonstrated extensive knowledge of Hawaiian thought and values, activities, protocol, culture, literature, performing arts, land, animals and other life forms. Demonstrated knowledge of the Kumu Honua Mauli Ola educational philosophy. Experience in teaching Hawaiian language, culture and other skills through Hawaiian and English at a variety of levels.

Desirable Qualifications: Ph.D. in a field directly related to Hawaiian language teaching and revitalization. Broad knowledge of language and culture revitalization in Hawaiʻi and elsewhere. Specialized skills in strengthening a community of primary speakers of Hawaiian. At least three years successful teaching of the Hawaiian language at the university level.

Pay Range: I3, salary commensurate with training and experience
