The main features I was looking for in my search for a university included: a unique location, affordable tuition, affordable housing, and travel industry connections. Hilo is not only unlike any other part of the US mainland, it is very unique compared to other parts of Hawaii. UH Hilo is strategically located for anyone who is interested in a career in the travel industry, but does not necessarily want to live in a big city such as Honolulu. I was able to enroll at UH Hilo because it was affordable for my family, even though I was paying out of state tuition. In addition, housing in Hilo is readily available and affordable. Through an internship, I was able to establish professional business connections at the most lucrative resort on the island.

After discovering Hawaii as the ideal location to carry out my education, the choice remained whether I would go to UH Hilo or UH Manoa.

I chose UH Hilo when I realized the value being offered. I was able to secure enrollment and affordable housing before even making my first trip to Hawaii.
