Chemistry Placement Exam - Online Registration Required

Students who wish to enroll in CHEM 124 (General Chemistry I) and have not passed CHEM 114 (or the equivalent) with a C or better are required to take the chemistry placement exam, which includes 20 algebra-based problems; 20 general chemistry concept questions, and 20 specific chemistry items. Computer Competency Exam - Online Registration Required

You must pass the exam before you will be able to register for any 300 or 400 level business courses, or to take ACC 250 or QBQ 260. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! You should take the exam if you: have been accepted and intend to enroll in Business courses at UH Hilo; have taken coursework in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access ( UH Hilo's CS 101 covers these topics); and have reviewed the list of tasks that are included on the exam and are confident of your ability to perform them.

English Proficiency Test - Online Registration Required

Required for all students whose first language is not English. Students who are non-native speakers of English entering UH Hilo for the first time must take both parts of this exam. Part A is a listening section made up of a multiple-choice test in response to audio-taped questions and an 18-minute lecture followed by a series of questions. Part B is a 75-minute, multiple choice test of grammar, vocabulary and reading skills. Please bring photo I.D. Students may be eligible for a waiver if they meet certain requirements. Hawaiian Language Placement Exam

Students who have previous taken Hawaiian language and believe they may be prepared for coursework beyond introductory Hawaiian 101 should take this exam. Be prepared to spend between 1.5 and 2 hours to complete the written and oral components.

Math Placement Exam

NOT required for students who intend on enrolling in MATH 100, 107, 108, 121, or higher than MATH 206. Enrolling in courses other than those listed requires the math placement exam.

For students taking the math placement exam: You must bring an ID card and a print card to print out result sheets. After taking the test, you must meet with math faculty. Math faculty will discuss your results, advise you to take appropriate math class, and enter placement exam results into the student information system, allowing you to register. You will not be able to register for a a math class without talking to an advisor about your placement exam scores. For more info visit the Math Lab Web Site.

Placement Exams

Depending on your major and the courses you are planning to enroll in, Placement Exams may be required. Placement exams in Chemistry, the Computer Competency, the English Proficiency Test (required for all students whose first language is not English) and Math are offered at different times throughout the year. Student Health Services

The UH Hilo's Student Health Services is staffed by part time physicians and a nurse practitioner. Services include medical care, prescriptions, first aid, health education, tuberculin test and immunizations.

Student Life Center

"The NEW UH Hilo Student Life Center construction was completed and opened last September. This beautiful facility consists of nearly 23,000 square feet of indoor fitness/recreational rooms, a cardio and weight room, dance and aerobics rooms, a lounge with wireless internet, an indoor cafe', locker rooms, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and an open deck by the swimming pool."

University 101- Student Success Writing Intensive Course - Fall 2009 Will Not Be Offered

We apologize in advance that SSSP's University 101 will not be offered to their participants during the Fall 2009 semester. The course will continue to be offered again in the future. Writing Placement Exam

The Writing Placement Exam (WPE) is an essay exam that determines what level writing course you should be assigned to. You will have two hours to compose an essay in response to a question. The time frame allows you to make full use of the writing strategies you have learned. You should take the exam if you: (1) have been accepted and intend to enroll at UH-Hilo and you have not yet earned credit for ENG 100 (or the equivalent).
