Taste of College: youth in transition (what is it!?)

Taste of College is an annual event that brings eighth grade students from different Big Island middle schools to UH Hilo for a day to get a "Taste of College" - exploring everything that the university has to offer! The project receives funding from a Diversity and Equity Initiative Grant through the Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity (SEED) Office. The goal is to reach out and recruit potential future students from the Big Island and expand the number of underrepresented groups enrolled at UHH. Taste of College is designed to give Island students early exposure to our campus and motivate them to develop an interest in college at a young age.

This year, our theme for Taste of College is “Youth in Transition”. We have invited approximately 50 students from Honoka`a Middle School to attend this year’s Taste of College event on Friday, February 8th, 2008. They will have the opportunity to participate in various activities including informational sessions on some programs that UH Hilo offers. As they walk around the campus, eat in the dining hall and interact with the professors, we hope that the students get a feel of how it is to be in college, and remember this experience when they are deciding which college to go to.

See you on February 8th!
