(Manini'owali Beach)
Located
off the Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway (19) north of Kona between mile markers
88 and 89, Kua Bay offers a fine white sand beach gently sloping down
into the ocean. During calm conditions, the swimming and snorkeling
are excellent and easy. However, the waves carry a great deal of power.
If the surf is moderate to high, the conditions will be unsafe to enter.
Since there are no lifeguards in this area, careful consideration must
be given to the conditions combined with each individuals level of experience
and swimming ability.
Facilities are limited but do include showers, drinking fountains,
and restrooms. There is very little shade in this location which requires
continued applications of sunscreen. Although there is what appears
to be a freshwater spring located on the northern end of the beach next
to a couple of palm trees, the water is not suitable for consumption
or rinsing off. Participants should plan on bring their own water and
food items.
Inherent Risks
It is the responsibility of each participant to evaluate the various risks that they may be exposed to if they decide to participate in this program. Some of the inherent risks include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Exposure to the sun
- Drowning
- Transport to and from Manini'owali Beach (Kua Bay)
- Motor vehicle and/or boating accident or incident
- Dangerous water conditions
- Dehydration, or motion sickness
- Spinal injury due to wave/surf action
- Broken bones, cuts, scrapes, or bruises
- Exposure/contact with marine life
- Exposure to cold. (water temp. approx.75 °F)
- Falling or slipping
- Strong winds, waves, or ocean currents
- Strong rip currents near shore that can take an individual out very quickly
- Remote location which could require extended time delays in case of emergencies
- No lifeguards or other rescue personnel on duty
Students are required to remain with the group during this program and not go on un-authorized selected activities or excursions without the group. If transportation is involved, participants must wear seat belts if available and are expected to return with the group.
