The University of Hawaii at Hilo's Student Health Services (SHS) is staffed by part-time physicians and a nurse practitioner. Services include medical care, prescriptions, first aid, health education, tuberculin tests and immunizations. The Women's Health Clinic, located within the SHS, offers pelvic exams, contraceptive methods, and testing for pregnancy and sexually-transmitted diseases.

Hilo Medical Center, located about four miles from campus, provides 24-hour emergency care.

Student Insurance

All students are strongly encouraged to purchase medical insurance. The University of Hawaii offers a student insurance plan. If you need an application, you may either pick one up at the SHS or call us at 808 974-7636 and it will be mailed to you. The Student Health Insurance information and application is also available online at www.hmsa.com/portal/student.

FALL SEMESTER Hours

  • Nurse Practitioner is available during the following hours
    • Monday through Friday
    • 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon
    • 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    • May vary due to other commitments.
  • Physicians are available the following hours during 2009
    • Tuesday - 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
    • Wednesday - 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
    • Friday - 9:00 - 11:30 a.m.

TB Skin Testing

TB skin testing is done every Monday morning from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Readings are done Thursday mornings from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon. There is a $3.00 charge.

Also, the Dept. of Health's Kuawa facility provides free TB tests on Tuesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 2 p.m. Their phone number is 974-6025.

Immunizations

Immunizations are done every Monday morning from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon on a walk-in basis.

Seasonal Flu Vaccinations available for students & staff:

Mondays and Wednesdays, 8-12 noon and Tuesdays from 1-3 p.m.

It is free for students and faculty/staff may have $15 charge.

You will be notified when the swine flu vaccine becomes available.

Women's Health Care

The Women's Health Clinic, located within the SHS, offers pelvic exams, Pap smears, pregnancy testing, testing and treatment for sexually-transmitted diseases and urinary tract infections, contraception (birth control pills, Depo-Provera® shot, Ortho Evra patch, or condoms), and the morning-after pill (must be taken within 90 hours after unprotected intercourse).

Services for males include exams, STD testing and treatment, and free condoms.

Confidentiality

All medical records at the SHS are strictly confidential and will not be released to anyone without your consent.
