The University of Hawaii at Hilo's Student Health Services (SHS) is staffed by part-time physicians and a nurse practitioner. Services include medical care, prescriptions, first aid, health education, tuberculin tests and immunizations, including MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) and meningitis shots. The Women's Health Clinic, located within the SHS, offers pelvic exams, contraceptive methods, and testing for pregnancy and sexually-transmitted diseases. Hilo Medical Center, located about four miles from campus provides 24-hour emergency care.

Mandatory Health Requirements

  • Hawaii State Law requires all students to submit TB (PPD-Mantoux) clearance (must be done within 12 months before first attending post-secondary school). Only TB tests and chest x-rays performed within the United States or its Territories will be accepted.
  • Students born after 1956 are required to have two doses of Measles vaccine with at least one of the two being Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccine.
  • Submit the completed Health History Form (Adobe Reader). The back page can be completed by your physician or if you have your own personal immunization records, you can submit a copy. Deadlines are July 15th for Fall semester and December 1st for Spring semester.

These requirements must be met before the start of classes. TB tests ($3.00)are given at the SHS. MMR vaccinations are available for uninsured only ($5.00).

Health Insurance

A University of Hawaii endorsed student health insurance plan is available for regular registered students taking six or more credits. To enroll, go here to download the information and application. You may also pickup a brochure outside the SHS or call 808 974-7636 and one will be mailed to you. International students on non-immigrant visas must have proof of health insurance and present such proof to the international student advisor prior to registration.

Returning Students

If your TB test and MMR immunization information are on file at the SHS from previous enrollment no additional testing is required.
