Counseling Center Staff
Barbara Heintz, Interim Director
(808) 933-3116; SSB 201
Barbara Heintz has over 30 years of counseling experience at UH Hilo, and she feels a deep gratitude to be able to work with students and the larger campus community. Through counseling, her intent is to create a caring and accepting relationship in which student(s) will be free to explore their own areas of concern and to find the courage to make the changes they seek. This respect for the individual and their ability to grow and change guides her work. Barbara’s counseling approach is primarily humanistic and person-centered, but she also draws from cognitive-behavioral approaches. She enjoys working with students who struggle with a wide-range of concerns such as stress and anxiety, depression, grief and loss, eating concerns, academic adjustment, GLBT issues, and self-esteem. Current professional interests include the role of mindfulness and spirituality in growth and healing. On the personal side, Barbara enjoys spending time with her husband, traveling, reading, playing tennis, cooking and journaling.
