Declaring or Changing Majors and Programs

Declaring a Major or Program

All students must declare a major before registering for their junior year or when he or she has earned 55 or more credits. You should be aware that it may take you more than four years to graduate if you do not decide on a major fairly early in your career at UH Hilo, particularly if you decide to major in one of the natural sciences.

To declare a major, you must complete the Declaration/Change of Major/Program form. Specific programs require additional signatures, please refer to the form. Bring it to the Records Office and be sure to keep a copy for your personal records.

If you need assistance with choosing a major, as many students do, discuss your interests with your advisor or the staff of the Advising Center, and check out the Quick Links on this web site.

Changing a Major

Students can change their majors as many times as they wish. Keep in mind, however, that changing your major may require additional semesters to complete the requirements for the new major.

Adding a Degree, Major, Minor, and/or Program

Students may pursue majors, minors, and/or programs in addition to their primary degrees and are encouraged to meet with advisors from the new programs before making a decision. To add a degree, major, minor, and/or program, complete the Declaration/Change of Major/Program form and submit it to the Office of the Registrar.
