Application

Complete and return the application form or complete the online application. Incomplete applications will not be considered past the deadline. Complete applications must have transcripts and test scores (please see below for more details). Your application must also be accompanied by the supplementary information form available on this page.

Application Fee & Mailing

Submit the 50US application fee by international postal money order, a check drawn on a US bank or complete the Credit Card Payment Form.This fee is non-refundable and should be paid each time you apply. A form to pay the fee by credit card is available for download in the Adobe Acrobat format. Submit the form by mail, fax or e-mail attachment.

Transcripts

Transcripts from all previous schools and colleges are required. Official transcripts must be sent directly from each school to the Admissions Office.

High School Students

High School students must have official high school transcripts and test scores sent directly to the Admissions Office.

If you are a high school graduate, ask the registrar to send an official copy of your transcript. Transcripts not in English will require a certified English translation. Students who attended a three-year high school may be required to send a transcript from your junior high school.

College Students

If you attended college, please have an official transcript sent to the Admissions Office. Transcripts not in English will require a certified English translation. If you want to transfer credits, your college must send course descriptions of the courses you have taken. The descriptions must be in English or be accompanied by a certified English translation. English Proficiency

If you are a non-native speaker of English, you may submit an official copy of your EIKEN, IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge Test of English, SAT, ACT or an equivalent national exam to the Admissions Office.

Application deadlines

  • Recommended dates for F-1 applicants:

    • Spring - October 1st

Prospective F-1 students are encouraged to apply early to allow time to complete the visa application process. Once a student has been accepted they must apply for an F-1 visa, complete I-901 Form and pay the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information) fee to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They then have to schedule an embassy interview, obtain the visa and travel to Hilo in time for registration. Supplementary Information form for International Students

Prospective F-1 visa students who apply online must complete and transmit the Supplementary Information Form for International Students. In Section C, the financial support requirement is $29,295 US. The completed form may be first faxed to the Admissions Office before mailing the original.

Certification of Domicile

The Certification of Domicile must be completed ONLY if you qualify for a statutory exemption from the nonresident tuition rate. To be eligible, applicants must be legal residents of any Pacific or Asian district, commonwealth, territory, or insular jurisdiction, state, or nation which does not provide public institutions of higher learning. These currently include the following: American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Futuna, Kiribati, Nauru, New Caldonia, Niue, Republic of Belau, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Soloman Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Wallis.

English Language Institute

Students who meet the University's academic admission requirements and have not taken a test of English, or who have a score of less than 500, 2A etc., can enter the English Language Institute first as preparation for academic study at the University. The student examinee copy of the test results can be faxed to Admissions. This will speed the processing of your application while we wait for the official copies to arrive.
