Your First Steps

We are excited about you becoming a part of our campus and would like to make your transition a smooth one so we recommend that you complete and submit the following, unless you have already done so:

  • If you are a US Citizen or permanent resident interested in Financial Aid, you should Submit a FAFSA and familiarize yourself with UH Hilo's financial aid process. (Citizens of Palau, FSM or Marshall Islands can also submit the FASFA).
  • Submit a Student Housing application (if applicable) and know the process for placement and payment.
  • Submit the UH Hilo Intent to Enroll. If you intend to enroll, include your $60 advance tuition deposit. Make your check or money order payable to UH Hilo. If you are receiving a tution waiver or financial aid, the advance tuition deposit is not required.
  • Establish a MyUH Portal account.
  • Submit the necessary documents for Health Clearance.
  • Sign-up and participate in Student Orientation held in August or January.

Consider making a campus visit. We can arrange meetings with an Admission's Officer, professor, or students. If you are not able to visit the campus, you can "speak" with students or professors via e-mail. Contact the Admissions Office at (808) 974-7414 or (800) 897-4456 to schedule a visit or to obtain e-mail addresses. You can also e-mail us at uhhadm@hawaii.edu.

Email: uhhfao@hawaii.edu
UH Hilo Website: www.uhh.hawaii.edu/financialaid
FAFSA Website: www.fafsa.ed.gov
UH Hilo Financial Aid Code: 001611
*Priority filing date: March 1, of each year

International students are not eligible for financial aid (see international students for details).

If you are a US Citizen or permanent resident it is highly recommended that you apply for both financial aid and scholarships so you can be considered for grants, loans and work-study programs (Citizens of Palau, FSM or Marshall Islands can also submit the FASFA). Merit-based scholarships should be applied for by March 1st of each year.

The UH Hilo’s scholarship application can be found at www.uhh.hawaii.edu.  Once we receive your FAFSA results, a Financial Aid Award Letter will be sent to you. This letter will detail the types and amounts of financial aid for which you are eligible. Review the award and return a signed copy of the letter to the Financial Aid Office within 3 weeks of the date of the letter.

At the start of each semester, most of your financial aid funds will be electronically credited to your student account. If there are any changes or concerns make an appointment with a financial aid counselor to discuss them. You must re-apply for financial aid every year by March 1st.

* Not applicable for students in F-1 immigration status.

International Students

The United States Government and the State of Hawaii do not make financial aid available to F-1 international students. There are limited University of Hawaii at Hilo institutional aid funds available to international students. Please email the Financial Aid Office for more information or visit the Scholarship Information page (pdf).

Email: uhhhouse@hawaii.edu
To apply: www.uhh.hawaii.edu/housing

Applications are being accepted from January 1st.

On-Campus Housing: Freshmen who apply for housing by April 1st are placed in the top priority category. Student Housing will process your application if you have been accepted into a classified program of study. If your housing application is received prior to being accepted into a degree program, the official application date will be the date that you are accepted. There is a $10 application fee that allows you to have a housing option until payment is required in early June.

Your first official notice will be the Hall Assignment/ Billing Statement. This will have information regarding your hall assignment and total cost. Full payment must be received by early June. If you have been receiving sufficient financial aid, you will be allowed to defer 80% of the total payment. The balance will be posted to your UH account and automatically deducted from your financial aid award. If your financial aid is still pending, suns us your billing statement with a note explaining your status so that we can follow-up with you. Your room assignment will be canceled if we do not receive your billing statement response.

Off-Campus Housing: Off-Campus housing options are also available and some can be accessed through the UH Hilo Housing web site (Off-Campus Housing). You can also check realtors' web sites or the local newspaper (the Hawaii Tribune Herald), for off-campus housing.
