Travel Awards at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo 2007-2008

Note to Faculty Travel Fund Applicants

The University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Research Council has established a program to allow funding of faculty and professional staff travel to present the results of their scholarly and creative efforts. Applications are available in all college and division offices, and you can also copy and paste the online copy of the form. Please read carefully the guidelines for the Application. Adherence to these guidelines determines whether an applicant is eligible to apply, not whether the funds will be granted. Applications are reviewed by a faculty committee selected from the membership of the UHH Research Council. Applications that do not meet the guidelines will not be considered.

The selection process is very competitive. Faculty travel funds are limited and not all eligible requests can be funded. The review committee may elect to partially fund an application. Appeals of denied applications will not be considered.

The criteria used by the council are:

  1. The quality and significance of the presentation.
  2. The importance of the conference. A priori, meetings of the national association or society in the applicant's discipline are considered to be the most significant.
  3. Applicant's record of professional productivity as evidenced by the refereed publications and other equivalent scholarly activity during the past five years.
  4. Applicant's record of extramural funding during the previous five years. Travel fund support comes from the return of indirect overhead funds generated by extramural grants.
  5. The clarity of the application. In the past, the council has been reluctant to fund presentations they could not understand. Be sure to draft your explanation using language and terms understandable to faculty in unrelated fields.

The guidelines for applications are:

  1. The one page statement should not only describe your presentation such that members of the Council who are not familiar with your field can understand it, it should also provide the review team with an idea of the relative significance of the conference in your field and why it is important that you attend.
  2. Awards are made to full-time faculty/staff members for presentation of papers or other scholarly works. When papers are co-authored, support will be available only for one author.
  3. Travel awards are limited to one award every fiscal year (July to June).
  4. Faculty/staff members on leave without pay are considered to be separated from the financial responsibility of the University and are ineligible.
  5. Faculty/staff members on sabbatical leave or on detached service, but still on the University payroll, are eligible. The intention is to support travel from the place of the sabbatical to the place of the professional meeting and not to provide transportation from Hawai'i to the place where the sabbatical leave will be spent. There should be a clear understanding that the sabbatical plan discloses the travel and that it is thereby approved.
  6. Visiting and temporary faculty are ineligible.
  7. Travel awards are limited to round-trip economy air transportation based on the minimum rates available and the conference fee, plus ground transportation and perdiem; the total award must not exceed $2400 . Receipts are required for charges other than per diem. Also, the UHH Research Council does not pay per diem for air travel time.
  8. Applications should be submitted to the UHH Research Council via Nadine Hara, at the UH Hilo Research Office (PB-10-2), two to three months before anticipated travel. Applications submitted less than 8 weeks before anticipated departure will not normally be accepted.
  9. For conferences outside the U.S. and Canada, the applicant may request early consideration.
