Seed Money Grants Further Instructions

The University of Hawaii at Hilo Research Council has established a Seed Money Grants Program to provide support for the initiation of research or innovative scholarship activities that have the potential of generating extramural funding, or an equivalent measure of scholarly achievement in fields where extramural funding is scarce. The Seed Money Grants also support the initiation of research in curriculum development or for training program planning, if such research has the potential of generating external support for the full utilization of the developed curriculum or training program.
To be eligible for consideration, the project proposal must be new and original. In addition, the proposal needs to be accompanied by a list of potential extramural agencies that may provide future support for the project. Limited grants are available only to full-time faculty/staff members of UHH. Visiting faculty and faculty on leave of absence without pay are ineligible to apply.
The maximum award is $15,000. Requests for smaller grants are strongly encouraged. Requests for larger amounts must be fully and carefully justified. The UHH Research Council reserves the prerogative of reducing the size of the an award below that requested by the applicant, if doing so is in the best interest of the overall Seed Money Grant program.
Proposals that include "matching funds" will be given priority. The matching fund must come from funds not already allocated or available to the principal investigator. The Research Council does not discriminate against faculty members who currently hold or who have previously held extramural grants. However, an intramural seed money grant is not intended to be used as a supplement to a previous or existing external grant.
Awards are limited to one research grant or one training grant per faculty/staff member per year. A grant may be considered for renewal for a second year only if there is strong evidence that the additional work will strongly enhance the potential for extramural support for the funded project, and that such external funds are available. A faculty/staff member may be awarded no more than two grants during a five-year period.
Please note that the Research Council will not provide Seed Money Grants for the following purposes:
- dissertation research
- manuscript preparation
- faculty salaries
- summer stipends
- books
- dues
- journal subscriptions
- supplies and equipment normally provided by the department
- personal computers and printers
- travel to professional meetings to present research results (please see Faculty Travel Fund)
Project proposals should include a completed application form signed by the applicant, the chair, and the dean or the director; a full narrative justification of items requested in the budget; and the required attachments as indicated on the application form.
Seed Money Grants are awarded on a competitive basis. The Research Council will review proposals based on the merit and feasibility of the proposed projects, as well as the projects' potential for generating extramural funding.
Proposals (original plus five copies) should be submitted to the UHH Research Council via Dr. Daniel Brown by April 6, 2009.
