Placement exams offered at different times during the orientation week. Be sure to check the requirements for your major to see if you will need to take these placement exams. For a list of major requirements, please refer to the UH Hilo Catalog or the batchelor degree checklist online.

Chemistry Placement Exam

Students who wish to enroll in CHEM 124 (General Chemistr I) and have not passed CHEM 114 (or the equivalent) with a C or better are required to take the chemistry placement exam. Advance registration is required for this exam.

Computer Competency

Only students who are planning to register for 300- or 400-level business courses, ACC 250, or QBA 260 need to take this exam. Advance registration is required.

English Proficiency Test

Students who are non-native speakers of English entering UH Hilo for the first time must take this exam. Students may be eligible for a waiver if they meet certain requirements. Advance registration is required for this exam.

  • Exam:

Math Placement Exam

NOT required for students who intend on enrolling in MATH 100, 107, 108, 121, or higher than MATH 206. Enrolling in courses other than those listed requires the math placement exam. Registration for this exam is NOT required.

For students taking the placement exam: You must bring an ID card and a print card to print out result sheets. After taking the test, you must meet with math faculty. Math faculty will discuss your results, advise you to take appropriate math class, and enter placement exam results into the student information system, allowing you to register. You will not be able to register for a a math class without talking to an advisor about your placement exam scores.

Writing Placement Exam

If you have not yet earned credit for ENG 100 (or the equivalent), you must take the Writing Placement Exam to enroll in ENG 100 or 100T at UH Hilo. Advance registration is required for this exam.
