AstroTalk - Glen Petitpas

Friday, April 18, 2008, 7pm to 8pm

@ UCB Room 100

Glen Petitpas (Smithsonian Submillimeter Array) will give a public "AstroTalk" on the UH Hilo campus on Friday, April 18th. Petitpas' talk, scheduled for 7pm at UCB Room 100, is entitled "The Secret Lives of Galaxies: The Invisible Ingredients"

Galaxies are composed of millions of stars and come in a wide
variety of shapes and sizes. Our understanding of the evolution
of the universe depends on our understanding of the formation and
evolution of galaxies.

In this talk I will compare images of classic nearby galaxies (including
our own Milky Way) taken with optical telescopes, and compare them
to the images at much longer wavelengths to show the surprisingly
large differences. I will then move farther away into the distant universe
where our eyes cannot help us anymore, to show how these new
telescopes are teaching us about the universe when it was very
young. I will conclude with a quick look at future observatories
that will eventually help paint a complete picture of the history of the
universe.
