UH Hilo film series continues with Faces of Women
The University of Hawaii at Hilo film series, Cinema from Africa and the Diaspora, continues on Thursday, November 6, with Faces of Women (1985), by Desire Ecare, Ivory Coast, at 6:30 p.m. in UH Hilo’s UCB 100. General admission is $3.00; no charge for currently registered UH Hilo/Hawai`i Community College students.
Faces of Women, awarded Winner International Critic’s Award, Cannes Film Festival, explores in two tales the role of women as they negotiate societal norms in a contemporary west African setting. In the first, an unhappily married young woman finds comfort in another man’s arms; in the second, a business woman opens a restaurant and finds herself faced with the many difficulties of being an entrepreneur. The film is in indigenous languages and French with English subtitles.
