UH Hilo seeks members for Mauna Kea Cultural Council

The Office of Mauna Kea Management (OMKM) at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo is seeking letters of applications from members of the Hawai`i Island community who may be interested in serving on OMKM’s cultural advisory council, Kahu Ku Mauna. Three seats on the nine-member body becomes available July 1, 2003.

“As described in the 2000 Mauna Kea Science Reserve Master Plan, Kahu Ku Mauna advises the OMKM, the Mauna Kea Management Board, and the Chancellor at UH Hilo on cultural maters, including programs and policies relating to the Mauna Kea Science Reserve,” explained Bill Stormont, director of the Office of Mauna Kea Management. “It also reviews and provides input on projects proposed for the Mauna Kea Science Reserve and if necessary, assists in dispute resolution.”

Membership qualifications are as follows:

1. Each member shall have sufficient knowledge and experience of, or be in the process of gaining such knowledge of and experience with the cultural significance and sacredness of Mauna Kea and the cultural practices and traditions as applied to traditional and customary use of Mauna Kea.

2. Members shall reside on the island of Hawai`i.
