American Genetic Association to meet in Hilo

The American Genetic Association (AGA) is holding it’s annual symposium this month at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo.
This year’s symposium is on Conservation Genomics. The meeting will take place on July 26-28, with a field trip July 29 to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Approximately 130 scientists from around the world will discuss their efforts to bring cutting-edge genomic technology to help solve pressing conservation problems.
“This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first meeting exclusively dedicated to applying genomic research to conservation and management of sensitive and endangered species,” said AGA President Dr. H. Bradley Shaffer, professor of evolution and ecology at the University of California at Davis and the meeting organizer.
UH Hilo Chancellor Dr. Donald Straney, an evolutionary biologist, will present opening remarks. The keynote speaker is Dr. Oliver Ryder, head of the San Diego Zoo’s Institute for Conservation Research. In addition, 27 biologists from universities and government agencies worldwide will present their work on preserving global diversity through genomics and 42 graduate students and post-doctoral researchers will present posters on their current and future research.
The AGA, founded in 1903, explores all aspects of genetics, from discovery-based science to applied crop and livestock improvement. The association publishes the Journal of Heredity, one of the top-ranked scientific journals in genetics.
