University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo College of Pharmacy students from the Hawaiʻi Chapter of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) put their skills to work at the Inaugural Veteran's Health Fair held April 17 at theYukio Okutsu Veteran’s Home.
Students offered free services to residents and their families on Diabetes & Wellness Education, Glucose Screening, High Cholesterol Education, Cholesterol Screening, High Blood Pressure Education, Blood Pressure Checks, Asthma/COPD Education, Information on Stroke, Diet and Nutrition Education and held an informational session on yoga and exercise.
Mimi Pezzuto, a member of the College of Pharmacy faculty and adviser to the group, said third-year pharmacy student Jill Gelviro came to her with the idea of organizing a health fair at the veteran's home.
“The fair had a great turnout and shows the power of how one person can make a difference in a community,” Pezzuto said. “But all the students stepped up and demonstrated how well they can interact with the community on a professional level. The reaction from residents and staff was extremely positive, and we're hoping this can become an annual event that will give our students hands-on training while helping our veterans and their families stay healthy.”
“Student pharmacists at UH Hilo are a powerful addition to our community,” said John Johnson, administrator of the Yukio Okutsu Veteran’s Home. “We are grateful to benefit from their knowledge and commitment, and we are proud of their accomplishments.”
