For Immediate Release

To help celebrate American Pharmacists Month, students from the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo College of Pharmacy are offering their First Health Fair on Sunday, October 18,10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the new Pharmacy building, 722 S. A'ohoku St. The event is free and open to the public.

Many activities will be available to promote healthy living, including diabetes and wellness education, asthma control awareness, a "brown bag medication check" to allow participants to bring their own medications for evaluation, blood pressure checks, cholesterol and glucose screening.

"Our students have developed their skills through working in local pharmacies and taking part in several community functions, but this is our first chance to educate and inform on such a large scale," said Mimi Pezzuto, Pharmacy instructor and adviser to the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP), the UH Hilo group from the College of Pharmacy that is sponsoring the fair. "This is a great opportunity to come out and see the expertise these students already have learned in their quest to help improve health care in Hawaiʻi."

Students from all three classes in the College of Pharmacy will participate in the First Health Fair. Tests will be performed by Pharmacy students now in their third year of study for a doctorate in pharmacy degree, also called a PharmD. They are the inaugural class in the College of Pharmacy, and will graduate in 2011.
