OLLI presents diabetes series
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Hawaii at Hilo presents a special videoconferencing series on Type 2 (adult onset) diabetes. Classes meet on Thursdays, October 9 through November 13, from 5 to 6:30 pm.
“We put this series together to make information available to our geographically separated communities,” stated OLLI Coordinator Marisa Miyashiro. “We want to help inform our people about the many available treatment options, as well as some methods for preventing diabetes and other illnesses.”
The Asian/Pacific Islander population in Hawai‘i has the highest diabetes mortality rate in the U.S.—and East Hawai‘i has the second highest diabetes prevalence rate in Hawai‘i. One in ten adults in East Hawai`i is believed to have diabetes, diagnosed or not.
To help combat this growing health threat, OLLI’s diabetes series presents a unique opportunity to access experts and practitioners from North and East Hawai‘i via videoconferencing. Presenters include Dr. Michelle Suber, Becky Stubbs, Miles Nakatsu, Jennifer Rabideau, Maureen McLaughlin, Anjalisa Aiken and Anita Cawley.
The series begins with an overview of diabetes and will cover standard Western medical approaches including nutrition, diet and commonly used medications. Subsequent sessions will explore alternative approaches such as traditional Chinese medicine, yoga and naturopathic medicine.
Participants may register to attend this class at either the Honoka`a or Hilo location. Tuition for the entire six class series is $25, with OLLI members receiving a $5 discount. To register, or for more information, call CCECS at 974-7664.
