Hilo businessman Ron Terry has established the Geography Founders Scholarship at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
The $25,000 endowed scholarship, to benefit Geography students in financial need, is named in honor of the department’s founders: Jim and Sonia Juvik, Jim Kelly and Jack Healy.
“We are honored Ron Terry has established this important scholarship,” said Chancellor Rose Tseng. “About 30 percent of our students come from families with very limited resources and nearly 70 percent are the first in their families to attend college. This generous contribution will help lessen the burden of debt with which so many UH Hilo students graduate, while honoring the visionary founders of one of our stellar programs.”
Terry founded and owns Geometrician Associates, a business and government consulting firm that conducts environmental assessments. He was a financially struggling student at UH Hilo three decades ago, who later taught geography for five years at UH Hilo before starting his successful consulting business.
“The Geography Department at UH Hilo gave me the basis for becoming a successful professional,” Terry said. “What I am giving back is only a small proportion of the added value I received at UH Hilo.”
