NHERC offers summer classes

The University of Hawaii at Hilo North Hawai`i Education and Research Center (NHERC), located in the former Honoka`a Hospital building, is currently accepting registrations for its summer classes. The low cost, non-credit classes sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) begins June 5 and run through August.
Keoki Kahumoku will instruct two classes this summer, Basic Slack Key Guitar and Beginning/Refresher ‘Ukulele. Keoki is Hawai‘i’s only local artist to be a part of four Hawaiian Grammy Award-winning albums and recent Na Hoku Hanohano nominee as a producer.
Instructor Makela M. Bruno-Kidani will offer an Introduction to Conversational Hawaiian Language class. Makela earned a BA in Hawaiian studies from UH Hilo, worked 12 years for ‘Aha Punana Leo, and is the co-host of KWXX’s Hawaiian Language program, Alana I Kai Hikina.
Dr. Hugh Montgomery will lead a Fitness through Hiking Hamakua class, which explores the natural history of Hamakua from Kalopa to Waipi‘o. Paul Zabel is returning as a computer instructor and offering two classes, Intuit QuickBooks Level 2 and Intro to Computers for Seniors. Jeani Navarro, who has over 30 years of grant writing experience, will teach a Grant Writing Workshop. Art instructor Lynn Cleare Goldman will offer one class this summer: Color! Oil Pastels will provide tips for using oil pastels as an exciting and economical medium for expression.
