For Immediate Release

The University of Hawaii at Hilo invites the public to its 2nd annual Ocean Day Hawai‘i, “Year of the Reef,” hosted by the Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resources Center and Marine Science Department, in partnership with the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant. This family-friendly event is Saturday, April 26, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the PACRC facility on Kalanianaole Avenue in Keaukaha. Admission is free.

“There will be plenty of crafts, activities, and educational resources for the whole family to enjoy,” said PACRC co-director Sharon Ziegler-Chong. “The keiki will love the fishing games, SCUBA diving demos, exhibits of native Hawaiian fishing techniques and touch tank exploration. Artwork focused on our coastal Hawai‘i-nei by Keaukaha keiki will be displayed and three underwater remote operated vehicles (ROVs) will be cruising around in a big tank, courtesy of Hilo Intermediate Robotics.”

Over 500 people attended the first Ocean Day last year. “This is a great opportunity to tour the aquaculture center, view ongoing research projects and interact with people who conserve our ocean resources,” noted Ziegler-Chong.
