Students grades 4-10, their parents and teachers at any grade level can currently register for the Third Annual Astronaut Ellison Onizuka Science Day on the Web at http://www.k12.hi.us/~east_354/onizukaday/. The event is scheduled for Saturday, January 25, 2003 at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo. Admission is free, but space is limited on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are also available by calling the UH Hilo Conference Center at (808) 974-7555, by e-mailing Art Kimura, Future Flight Hawai'i at firstname.lastname@example.org or online at http://www.spacegrant.hawaii.edu/. Confirmation will be sent to registered participants. Online applicants will receive instant confirmation.
The keynote speaker is astronaut Dominic Gorie, a veteran of three National Aeronautic and Space Administration space shuttle flights between 1998 and 2001. Gorie, a U.S. Navy Captain, is an aviator of distinguished service, including Operation Desert Storm. His medals and achievements include: Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat "V"; Joint Meritorious Service Medal; Air Medal (2); Space Flight Medal (2); Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V" (2); Navy Achievement Medal and Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic Pilot-of-the-Year.
Astronaut Ellison Onizuka Science Day celebrates the memory of Kona-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, a U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and aviator who was killed January 28, 1986 in the tragic explosion of the NASA Space Shuttle Challenger.
