International trade specialist to speak at UH Hilo

The University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Business and Economics hosts a special presentation by a nationally acclaimed and respected international trade economist.

Dr. Robert E. Baldwin will provide his commentary and observations on the World Trade Organization’s efforts to liberalize international trade in the recent Doha Development Round on Tuesday, September 11, 5 p.m., in UH Hilo’s Campus Center 301. The public is invited to attend.

Named for its first ministerial meeting in Doha, Qatar, in 2001, the Doha round developed a trade agenda aimed to lower trade barriers with negotiations to open agricultural and manufacturing markets, as well as negotiations on services and intellectual property regulation. As of 2007, talks have stalled over a divide between the developed countries and the major developing countries.

Baldwin is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and on the advisory panel to The WTO Director General. He has served as chief economist for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, and as consultant to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the World Bank, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Baldwin’s talk will focus on the political economy of these multilateral trade negotiations.
