UH Hilo offering Asian American psychology summer course
The University of Hawaii at Hilo is offering a new course, “Asian American Psychology” (PSY 494, CRN 10192) during its summer session. The course will be taught by Dr. Bryan S. K. Kim, an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at UH Hilo. Kim is well known for his research on Asian American psychology and has received awards from the Asian American Psychological Association, American Psychological Association, and American Counseling Association.
“In the aftermath of the murder rampage by 23-year-old Korean-American student Seung-Hui Cho at Virginia Tech University, this course examines the personality and mental health issues of Asian Americans,” Kim said. “Special emphasis is given to how minority group status, adaptation processes, and bicultural development influence various aspects of Asian Americans’ psychological functioning.” Specific topics include stereotypes and racism, processes of acculturation and enculturation, cultural values and behavioral norms, family roles, and ethnic identity development. In addition, the topics of communication styles, gender and interracial relationships, academic and career achievement, stressors and social support systems within Asian communities, psychopathology, and culturally competent mental health treatment and service delivery will be explored. The experiences of Asian Americans in Hawai‘i will be compared and contrasted to those of Asian Americans living in the continental U.S.
The course begins June 12 and ends July 20. It will be taught as an online class via WebCT, which means that all lectures will be accessible through the Internet. Typically each lecture will consist of PowerPoint slides with audio, plus supplementary online materials.
