UH Hilo professor to address Scientific Congress in Okinawa
A University of Hawaii at Hilo Professor of Agribusiness has been selected to participate in the 21st Pacific Science Congress in Okinawa, Japan.
Dr. Sabry Shehata will present his research paper entitled, “The Use of the Interactive Economic Model in Estimating the Economic Feasibility of Establishing a Home Care Cooperative in East Hawai`i,” during the gathering scheduled June 13-17, 2007.
Shehata’s paper is the product of a six-month study in which he partnered with his daughter, Dr. Cherie Shehata, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa’s John A. Burns School of Medicine and a practicing physician at Kaiser Permanente on O`ahu. Their research was part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Steering Committee’s feasibility study and analysis of East Hawai`i’s home care industry, which sought to determine whether establishing an Adult Home Care Health Cooperative was economically viable.
Shehata’s study utilized the interactive economic model he developed to estimate the project’s financial feasibility. While spreadsheets can be cumbersome and difficult to use, the new interactive economic feasibility model is user friendly and provides decision makers with an accurate, timely analysis by changing any or all variables to produce different outcomes. Data on the cost of establishing a business is input into the model, which then estimates the Pro forma Income Statement, Pro forma Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statement, and conducts the financial analyses needed to approve a loan.
The interactive program provides not only an accurate analysis but a more effective way to respond to any changes in market environments, such as wages.
The model is written in PHP and is published on the Hawaiian Agricultural Products Website. For a demonstration, visit http://hawaiianagriculturalproducts.com.
