UH Hilo Alumni and Friends award scholarships

Three University of Hawaii at Hilo students have been selected to receive $1,000 scholarships from the UH Hilo Alumni and Friends Association.
The three are Angela Capogrossi, Shantaye Cardoza-Maikui and Kiera Yabusaki. All are second-generation UH Hilo students whose mothers are alumnae.
Capogrossi, a chemistry major with plans to obtain a pharmacy degree, is a graduate of Hilo High School where she participated in student government and chaired several events. She was a member of the 2005 BIIF champion girls soccer team.
Cardoza-Maikui is entering UH Hilo as a biology major with plans to become an orthopedic surgeon and sports physician. She a graduate of Laupahoehoe High School where she held several leadership positions as class officer. She was active in tennis, volleyball and girls basketball.
Yabusaki is a dual major in business administration and health and physical education. A graduate of Waiakea High School, she won numerous awards and held leadership roles in Kiwanis and student government. She participates in UH Hilo’s intramural bench press competition, tug of war competition and basketball.
Students are selected based on academic merit and financial need. They also must be or have an immediate family member who is an alumnus of UH Hilo.
The UH Hilo Alumni and Friends Association holds annual signature events to raise scholarship funds for students attending UH Hilo. Each spring, the Distinguished Alumni and Service Awards Banquet includes a silent auction to raise such funds.
