For Immediate Release
The Departments of English and Linguistics at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo have announced a new certification program in Teaching English as a Second Language, (ESL) which will be offered on a two-year rotation, beginning Fall 2003.
The certification program provides students with a theoretical foundation and practical tools for teaching English as a second language. Coursework includes the study of general linguistics, the English language, language acquisition, and the cultural and social aspects of language, as well as English as a Second Language materials and methods. The program's culminating experience will be a supervised internship in UH Hilo's English Language Institute program.
The 18-credit program is designed for students with an interest in teaching English as a Second Language abroad, or in a wide range of educational settings in the United States. English or Linguistics majors might find the program a useful adjunct to their baccalaureate training as will students pursuing other majors who are interested in working in other countries. Current or prospective elementary or secondary teachers may also find the program a useful addition to their professional credentials.
For more information about the program, please contact the Chair of English, Dr. Sherryll Mleynek (974-7673), the Chair of Linguistics, Dr. Masafumi Honda (974-7471), or the Chair of the Humanities Division, Dr. Kenith Simmons (974-7478).
