A three-day conference focusing on culture, gender and sexuality will be held on the University of Hawaii at HiloCampus and at Kilauea Military Camp on Friday, February 10 through Sunday, February 12, 2006.
“Weaving the Fabric of Diversity” will address the mix of culture, ethnicity, gender and sexuality on the Island of Hawai`i, which the 2000 U.S. Census found to be the most diverse county in the United States. Through its speakers and workshops, the conference will seek to open a valuable dialogue at the community level on the wide spectrum of identity.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Joan Roughgarden, professor at Stanford University and author of the book, Evolution's Rainbow. Workshop presenters for the conference will include Richard Barton of The Center, Hina Wong of Kulia Na Mamo, and UH Hilo’s Douglas Mikkelson and Shepherd Bliss.
The keynote program is free and open to the public, and will be held in UH Hilo’s UCB 100 on Friday, February 10 at 6:00 p.m. The Saturday and Sunday sessions will be held at Kilauea Military Camp. A one-day registration fee of $25 or $60 for overnight registration will be charged for those sessions, which includes meals and housing. A limited number of spaces are reserved for UH Hilo students and faculty at no cost.
The event is hosted by the UH Hilo Gay and Lesbian Ohana (GLO), the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Intersex and Questioning (LGBTIQ) and Allies Ohana. GLO was awarded a UH System Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity grant to help host the conference.
