From opposite sides of the islands, through a sprinkling of holiday spirit and the memory of a remarkable man, a new friendship has formed this holiday season. Koloa-based Ornaments to Remember has teamed up with the University of Hawaii at Hilo Edwin H. Mookini Library to create a one-of-a-kind collectible ornament in honor of the Library’s namesake, late Chancellor Dr. Edwin H. Mookini.
The ornaments are mouth-blown and hand-painted by European artisans. Each is individually gift-boxed with a descriptive insert card. Ornaments to Remember customized the exclusive Edwin H. Mookini Library ornaments for the Library’s annual “Night in the Stacks” fund raiser and celebration. It is the first time the Library has offered a collectible. All proceeds from the ornaments will help purchase library materials and support Library staff development.
“We are very pleased with the depiction of the Library, and quality of the ornaments,” explained University Librarian Linda Golian-Lui. “We are especially proud that the ornaments are a tribute to Dr. Edwin H. Mookini. Dr. Mookini believed the quality of the academic university was dependant on the quality of the Library. It is appropriate the ornaments reflect the building that was constructed because of his dedication.”
The ornaments are on sale for $20.00 each at the Edwin H. Mookini Library’s Circulation Desk until December 22, 2004. The cost includes all tax and a $10 contribution to the Friends of the Edwin H. Mookini Foundation Account. No phone or mail orders are accepted. General parking at UH Hilo costs $2.00. Visitors may purchase a parking pass at the Parking Booth off of Kawili Street.
