Delegates from this year's Model United Nations competition at UN Headquarters
The University of Hawai`i at Hilo Model United Nations (MUN) Team returned recently from the National MUN competition at UN headquarters in New York City with a significant achievement.
This year's competition brought together over 3,000 students from more than 100 colleges and universities across the United States and 22 other countries.
UH Hilo, which has been Hawai`i's lone representative for the past six years, distinguished itself as one of only two universities to have two students selected as UN Committee Chairs.
Brittany Smart, a junior political science major from Portland, Oregon, was selected as the presiding chair for the Commission on Human Rights. The committee consisted of nearly 100 students, and dealt with a variety of very sensitive international human rights issues.
Meanwhile, Rex Kuhlmann, a senior political science major from
Mountain View, presided over the African Union Committee. Kuhlmann's panel grappled with several of the most pressing political, economic, and social issues confronting African states today.
"Both Smart and Kuhlmann were selected through an extremely competitive process, and were honored at the end of the five-day session," said Dr. Phillip Taylor, professor of political science and faculty advisor to the UH Hilo MUN team. " Many of their fellow committee participants described them as the best chairs they had seen."
The UH Hilo MUN team was selected to represent Austria at this year's conference. Other members were Robert Parker (head delegate), Hazel Butler, Michiko Eto, Megan Floyd, Voltaire Gansit, Korin Hirato, Christie Hohl, Serette Kaminski, Cassi Keawe, Vincent Kruse, Loli Ma`o, Francis Mendiola, Cory
Sill, Clark Teng, Tai Tokeshi, Breanna Waliser and Cody Yoshimura.
