For Immediate Release
At the request of community leaders, the University of Hawaii at Hilo will begin securing the public access area associated with the Pacific Aquaculture & Coastal Resources Center at Puhi Bay, effective February 1, 2004.
The public access on the road leading to the breakwater will remain open to pedestrian traffic 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. Vehicular access will be permitted on the public access road each day from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Off-street parking will be permitted in the lot area located just off of Kalanianaole Avenue at the beginning of the access road for those visiting the area between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
The measures are designed to enhance public access by maintaining a safe and clean beachfront for residents and visitors. Similar policies are employed at all County-managed facilities along public shorelines, and the University has been encouraged both by the County and the local neighborhood association to better secure the area.
Signs will be posted on-site spelling out the hours of operation.
