For Immediate Release
The University of Hawai`i at Hilo's Na Pua No`eau has received a grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) in the amount of $1,163,896 for two years to continue providing educational enrichment opportunities to Native Hawaiian students in grades K through 12.
The grant extends OHA's support for the following educational
enrichment programs: Super Saturdays (one-day events), Kupulau (students exploring depth of topics and/or broadening areas of interest), Ho'omalamalama (summer youth program) and the Hawaiian Family AfFair.
These programs are offered at the following Na Pua No`eau sites: University of Hawai`i at Hilo, University of Hawai`i at Manoa, Kaua`i Community College, Maui Community College, Moloka'i Education Center, Hawai`i Community College UH Center at West Hawai`i. Na Pua No`eau Director Dr. David K. Sing said the grant illustrates OHA's effort to improve the conditions of Native Hawaiians, while the University of Hawai`i partnership will enable Na Pua No`eau to offer program activities to hundreds of Native Hawaiian students across the state.
"This grant is significant because it allows us to function and provide Hawaiian education to all of the communities throughout the State of Hawai`i,"
Sing said."The funding also creates a greater capacity with our
partnering agencies to provide a continuum of programs including summer residential programs, mentoring opportunities, internships and youth conferences." The funding period is from September 1, 2003 through August 31, 2005.
